Do they ever...

Post by flighter »

I hope it won't sound arrogant... But I was wondering if people involved in making great movie sequels ever lurk around places such is this one, to see how fans feel about their creations, and to maybe get some ideas?

From what I understand JC had a person or people looking around the internet at places like this and also in the fanfiction world. I don't think it was so much for good ideas as to make sure he doesn't duplicate someone else's ideas. I know I would love to see Dbe's vision of the ocean clan on film. :D

Sometimes I wonder that too - there are so many great ideas out there. Discussions, art, fanfictions, theories...

Of course it differs from person to person, if they feel like doing this (or hire people to do it for them) and what their reasons are. Of course they wouldn't do it to get ideas like Lrr said (plagiarism anyone?), but more to find out how the fan community feels about certain things.

I know that some writers, like JK Rowling and Stephenie Meyer, like(d) to visit their fan forums and interact with them. JK Rowling added a paragraph where Hermione explains how to pronounce her name to Kruml, because apparently a lot of fans weren't sure how the name was pronounced (this was before the movies became a big hit obviously). And Stephenie Meyer is even know to have sent in 'fanfics' herself, lol!

PS: your thread titles are kinda vague ;)

Madam, is that a complaint or just an innocent observation? :D

Professional writers generally will not read fanfics as a rule, so they have plausible deniability if thy ever do something coincidentally similar to a fanfic.

Oh I'll bet some of them do, at least to get reactions from the fans if nothing else. So far it seems Kathy Franklin (from FOX/Lightstorm) is the "official" link btw the Avatar fan community (via LearnNa'vi.org) and JC/Lightstorm, since she's in charge of the Avatar "brand"/franchise and so she can have contact with the fans directly. Kinda like how TheOneRing.net is the Tolkien/LOTR fanbase that has direct ties to WETA & Peter Jackson. :)
